The Power of Emotions

All of us are capable of feeling. We experiment a vast number of emotions each day. Even though feeling is completely normal, we are never taught how to deal with our emotions. Instead we are taught to only feel certain emotions. One can only smile at life, no room for other emotions because they’re a “waste of time”. But, the real waste of time is pretending.

Nobody ever explains how to channel these “negative” emotions or why we are feeling them. Instead they lead us to believe we are not allowed to feel anything but happiness. By the time we grow and start feeling the same emotions we felt growing up, only heavier, we become puzzled.

“Why am I feeling this way? I’m not supposed to feel like this”. Well, yes you are. You can’t help what you feel, you can’t change it or make it go away just like that. Of course you are going to feel out of place on the first day of a new job. Yes, getting fired feels horrible, and makes you feel lost. OF COURSE GROWING UP MAKE US WANNA CRY SOMETIMES! We should never be hard on ourselves for feeling. It’s the most human thing we do.

It is our job to relearn this whole concept. Start naming our emotions, asking ourselves what is making us feel this way and how we can change it. Always telling ourselves feeling is ok, being sad is ok, being mad is ok. Feeling is not a waste of time, it actually makes us grow and get to know ourselves better.

As we gain knowledge of our own emotions we can start learning how to channel and control our reactions. When we don’t recognize what we are feeling we act by impulsiveness. We don’t understand ourselves and so we don’t know how to act. How can we start understanding our emotions?

Ask yourself:

• Why am I feeling like this?

• How do I want to feel?

• How important are my emotions to me?

• How stable is my emotional relationship with myself?

• How often do I validate myself?

• How often do I avoid myself and my feelings?

• What can I do to feel better?

It is also important to understand the difference between feelings and emotions. You may say you feel sad but, sad how?

A feeling is a more general and vague way of expressing emotions. Your emotions have first and last names.

• “I feel depressed

I feel serene

I feel lost.”

• “I want to feel stable

I want to feel at peace

I want to feel centered.”

I hope you all start a great conversation with yourselves, exploring your feelings and understanding this excercise doesn’t make you weak. It makes you even more powerful than before. Truth be told our capacity to give our emotions priority in our lives gives us more power to put our lives in order. We tend to put other people’s emotions before our own, and what kind of power has that given us in our lives?

The Beholder of Your Health

As Dr. Joe Dispenza has expressed before, we need to sit ourselves down, train ourselves as we would a pet or a child. Tell ourselves “yes, we will get to doing that but first sit down, internalize this moment, reflect, take a moment to pay attention to yourself”. It is crucial we start hearing what our body asks for, acknowledge it and our emotions in order to take over control of our health.

“Sintergética” also known as psychology of the soul, is the understanding that our thoughts and emotions have an effect on our health. Dr. Jorge Carvajal, is a master on this topic. He expresses how intense our responsibility towards our health is. We tend to always depend on doctors and medicine to better our health, driving the responsibility away from ourselves.

Truly, we are the protagonists of our health. We have to take care, nourish, and pay attention to ourselves. Learning how to cope with stress, traumas and difficult emotions is part of this process.

Why is it we always wait for the worse to happen in order to pay attention to our health problems? The moment we are diagnosed with a certain illness is the moment we start looking into ourselves. Why wait until things go wrong to take action?

Let’s make a habit out of preventing our bad health and start treating ourselves right from the start. I have mentioned before that you are what you think, and nothing could be truer. Pay attention to your body, your emotions. Don’t wait until everything backfires.

For more information on this topic I share with you this link to a video which contains an extense interview with Dr. Joe Dispenza.

Facing yourself

Have you ever spent time in silence? Really silent, just you with you. A moment in which you take a deep breath and pay attention to yourself. Have you ever achieved a moment like that?

As we grow up we are told exactly what to do in order to “succeed”, by the time we reach our 30’s we may feel we have taken on the world, or maybe not so much. During our lives we are prepared to face the world in some ways, but in no way does anyone prepare us to face ourselves. To connect with our body, mind, and spirit.

This connection is so important to our personal development. We get headaches, backaches, maybe some extremity has been hurting for a while; but do we pay attention to all of these signals? Yes, they are signals. Most of our aches are a reflection of something deeper going on inside of us. All that sleep deprivation, all those colds, and even serious diseases are a result of our neglection towards ourselves. And at the same time an overdose of stress, anticipation, anxiety, and uncertainty.

We keep going because we think its temporary but sooner or later we have to respond. We have to face our needs, our feelings, our spirit.

Our mind is constantly telling us what to do, we have emotions swarming all over us. But, have you ever paid attention to what your spirit has to say? We tend to go straight to our minds for answers on what to do next. Not once have we ever thought of letting our spirirt tell us what to do. We just become this mess of emotions and “shoulds” and “should haves”.

Only when we take a moment in silence and ask ourselves {mind, body, and spirit} what to do we will reach all the answers we are looking for.

Take a deep breath, ask your gut how you are really feeling, ask your spirit what to do and ask your mind how to do it.
