All of us are capable of feeling. We experiment a vast number of emotions each day. Even though feeling is completely normal, we are never taught how to deal with our emotions. Instead we are taught to only feel certain emotions. One can only smile at life, no room for other emotions because they’re a “waste of time”. But, the real waste of time is pretending.
Nobody ever explains how to channel these “negative” emotions or why we are feeling them. Instead they lead us to believe we are not allowed to feel anything but happiness. By the time we grow and start feeling the same emotions we felt growing up, only heavier, we become puzzled.
“Why am I feeling this way? I’m not supposed to feel like this”. Well, yes you are. You can’t help what you feel, you can’t change it or make it go away just like that. Of course you are going to feel out of place on the first day of a new job. Yes, getting fired feels horrible, and makes you feel lost. OF COURSE GROWING UP MAKE US WANNA CRY SOMETIMES! We should never be hard on ourselves for feeling. It’s the most human thing we do.
It is our job to relearn this whole concept. Start naming our emotions, asking ourselves what is making us feel this way and how we can change it. Always telling ourselves feeling is ok, being sad is ok, being mad is ok. Feeling is not a waste of time, it actually makes us grow and get to know ourselves better.
As we gain knowledge of our own emotions we can start learning how to channel and control our reactions. When we don’t recognize what we are feeling we act by impulsiveness. We don’t understand ourselves and so we don’t know how to act. How can we start understanding our emotions?
Ask yourself:
• Why am I feeling like this?
• How do I want to feel?
• How important are my emotions to me?
• How stable is my emotional relationship with myself?
• How often do I validate myself?
• How often do I avoid myself and my feelings?
• What can I do to feel better?
It is also important to understand the difference between feelings and emotions. You may say you feel sad but, sad how?
A feeling is a more general and vague way of expressing emotions. Your emotions have first and last names.
• “I feel depressed
I feel serene
I feel lost.”
• “I want to feel stable
I want to feel at peace
I want to feel centered.”
I hope you all start a great conversation with yourselves, exploring your feelings and understanding this excercise doesn’t make you weak. It makes you even more powerful than before. Truth be told our capacity to give our emotions priority in our lives gives us more power to put our lives in order. We tend to put other people’s emotions before our own, and what kind of power has that given us in our lives?
